Description
Zencity is on a mission to help local governments build trust within their communities using cutting-edge technology. Our platform enables cities, counties, and public agencies to better understand community sentiment, make data-driven decisions, and improve public engagement. Backed by top-tier partners, we are growing rapidly and looking for mission-driven professionals to join our team.
We are seeking a Director of Communications to lead and elevate Zencity’s communications strategy. This is a high-impact role that will shape how Zencity and its customers are positioned in the public conversation about local government, community trust, and public safety. The Director of Communications will be responsible for developing and executing a communications strategy that secures earned media coverage, amplifies Zencity’s thought leadership, and enhances the visibility of our work in collaboration with local governments around the globe.
As the primary spokesperson and external communications lead, this role will oversee media relations, content strategy, and executive positioning. The Director of Communications will report to the Chief Strategy Officer and work closely with the marketing team and members of the company’s senior leadership.
Success in this role means that:
- Zencity’s customers are regularly featured in their local media, sharing stories of their successes—with a clear connection to how Zencity helped enable those successes.
- Zencity’s data is consistently cited in the media as a valuable source for understanding public attitudes toward key issues, current events, and community trends.
- The company has a systematic approach to generating media-worthy insights, leveraging Zencity’s unique data to fuel compelling stories that resonate with the public and the press.
- Zencity is recognized as a go-to resource for journalists and content creators, with a growing network of local and national media who rely on our insights to support their reporting.
Achieving these outcomes will require a deep understanding of what makes a story newsworthy and of interest to Zencity’s market, the ability to package and present Zencity’s data in ways that attract media interest, and proactive relationship-building with journalists at the local and national levels.
Key Responsibilities
- Thought Leadership: Elevate Zencity’s profile as a trusted voice in government technology and public engagement by securing executive speaking opportunities, drafting opinion pieces, and placing strategic media stories.
- Media Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, editors, and influencers in local, national, and industry media. Serve as the primary point of contact for press inquiries.
- Story Development: Identify compelling narratives that highlight Zencity’s impact and craft them into press-ready materials, including case studies, press releases, op-eds, and media pitches.
- Customer Communications Enablement: Assist Zencity’s clients—cities, counties, and states—in sharing their success stories with the public, helping to craft announcements and press releases that showcase their achievements.
- Data Storytelling: Work with Zencity’s data and research teams to identify trends, insights, and findings that can be packaged for media and public consumption.
- Reputation Management: Lead proactive and reactive communications strategies to protect and enhance Zencity’s brand reputation.
- Cross-Team Collaboration: Work closely with the marketing team to align communications efforts with broader brand and demand-generation initiatives. Partner with senior leadership to shape messaging and external positioning.
